Mountain development has an influence on long-term changes of uplift, erosion, and groundwater flow related to change in hydraulic gradient. Provenance analysis is one of promising geological methods to understand origin and formation process of mountains. Case study in the Tono area, central Japan has been done for research and development of individual technique to estimate a provenance. In this report, petrological descriptions by meso- and microscopic observations and elemental distributions using scanning X-ray analytical microscope of basement rocks (silicic igneous rocks) from the study area were compiled.

Online coupling of two-phase flow solvent extraction microfluidics with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

A direct coupling of two-phase flow solvent extraction microfluidics with ICP-MS for element-selective analysis is successfully established. Two-phase flow in microchannels of two combined glass chips for continuous extraction and back-extraction is stabilized through balancing the pressure by using an external coiled tube that functions as a flow resistor. The difference of fluid flow rate between microchannels and ICP-MS is adjusted by a proposed interface system including T-junction mixer and a switching valve. An online measurement of rhenium is successfully demonstrated. The calibration curve for Re is carried out in the range of 1 $$mu$$g/L to 20 $$mu$$g/L. The limit of detection is 0.2 $$mu$$g/L with a needed sample volume of one milliliter. Total time including extraction, back-extraction, and measurement is less than one hour. The development of the online coupling is a first step towards future applications to the selective measurement of highly radioactive elements.

Replication of individual snow crystals for their subsequent chemical analysis using micro-PIXE

A snow crystal scavenges earozol particles and trasfer various elements in atomosphere through heterogenious nucleation. The snow has many complicated crystal shapes which results in difficulty in comparison of its environmental purification function directly with that of raindrops. The replica of individual snow crystal grain was prepared by their immobilization on the collodion film. The replica samples were analized by micro-PIXE at JAERI and PIXE st Kyoto university. The following results are obtained: (1) Size(circumscribed diameter) of individual snow crystal are in the range of 0.12-2.5mm, (2)snow crystal grows from hexagnal plate to dendritic sectored plate, (3) major elements captured by a snow crystal are Si,S,K,Ca,Fe,S, (4)there is relation between snow crystal size and captured-element masses. The result leads us to presume the chemical inner-structure and the elemental mixing state in/on single snow crystal.

Commercial ICP AES is often applied for analysis of radioactive nuclides present in the waste stream. However, the instrument is bulky with auxiliary equipment. Consequently, it is difficult to maintain or replace those instruments in a shielded cell or a glove box. A novel liquid electrode plasma (LEP) would be a suitable option instead of ICP. LEP is compact to be easily installed, maintained and operated in a shielded cell or a glove box because the method does not require plasma gas, a nebulizer or large power supply. LEP allows only $$mu$$L-level waste emission due to the use of microchannel. In the study, we utilized LEP as an excitation source for analysis of radioactive nuclides. The newly installed instrument was characterized by determining cesium and strontium in a highly active waste simulated sample. The obtained result is promising for further application of LEP in the field of radiochemical analysis.

A simple and rapid method for determination of Cs and Tc in highly radioactive liquid waste (HALW) using liquid electrode plasma (LEP) has been developed. Effects of pulsed voltage sequence and nitric acid concentration on emissions of these elements are investigated. The method is applied to the quantitative analysis of Cs and Tc in HALW samples at Tokai reprocessing plant.

An analytical technique for determination of elemental strontium in highly radioactive liquid waste (HALW) using liquid electrode plasma optical emission spectrometry (LEP-OES) has been developed. We use the LEP-OES instrument that is installed recently. Measurement condition including voltage and sample acidity is optimized. The method is validated using simulated HALW and comparing with inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-OES). The measurement of real HALW is being carried out.

Analysis of spectra using processed data as training data in the neural network

As a method of analyzing multi-element spectral data obtained by LIBS, etc., we are constructing an analysis system using a neural network. More learning data is expected to improve accuracy, but it takes time and effort to prepare many actual samples. Therefore, the spectral data of Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, TiO$$_{2}$$ and ZrO$$_{2}$$ were mixed on the data by changing the ratio to create 462 types of processed learning data, and the data were learned. After that, we analyzed the content ratio between each element of 62 kinds of data of real samples obtained by microwave LIBS measurement and examined its characteristics. As a result, the content ratio was obtained with a difference of about 10% from the true value.
